Samsung Blu Ray Player Netflix
Do I need an AV Receiver? Can I not just go from the DVD player directly to Speakers?
We plan to finally get the kids a Wii this year, along with that the wife and I are getting ourselves a new DVD player, which by default will most certainly be a new Blu-Ray player with Netflix and Pandora streaming. To the question: the DVD player has output for speakers, so I assume I could go straight to the speakers. My cabinet does not exactly have the room for the minimum 8″ tall receiver. I also don’t want to spend another $500 if not needed.
For what its worth, the DVD player we are currently considering is the Samsung BD-P3600.

I looked at the manual. That set of connections is for connecting discrete analog surround sound to a receiver. In other words, those outputs are “line-level” and will not power speakers without amplification. Your best bet is to buy a receiver and connect the player via optical or RCA “coax”.
In case your wondering why someone would go through the trouble of connecting 8 lines to a receiver,
It’s because the commonplace optical or coax digital standards are compressed and some audiophiles want to hear every last detail available from DVD-audio, Blu-ray, SACD, etc. So, they use analog receivers which take the discrete analog outputs directly from the player.
